ICUT-2023: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON URBAN TRANSFORMATION
FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION
OVERVIEW:
The cities today are at the core of the rapid and uneven urbanization. This scenario is even more intense in the cities of global south which are transforming rapidly, these cities have to be at the focus of all global developmental agendas. This intense transformation process along with the growing concerns of climate change present both challenges and opportunities for thinking and acting out city futures. Cities are the key contributor to climate change, as urban activities are major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Estimates suggest that cities are responsible for 75 percent of global CO2 emissions, with transport and buildings being among the largest contributors. However, they are also the ones to bear the biggest brunt of Climate change. Choices made today about the types, features and location of long-lived infrastructure will determine the extent and impact of climate change, and the vulnerability or resilience of societies to it. This can be achieved with a coordinated approach and action at the global, regional, national and local levels. It is essential, therefore, to make cities an integral part of the solution in fighting climate change. Urban transformation offers this opportunity for a city to regain its identity, improve living conditions, provide public and green areas (parks), and develop a modern urban infrastructure. With the urban transformation, not only the physical characteristics of the space but also the social structure and economic dynamics change, and the economic value increases with these projects.
